MultiLJ - A Multi-Window LiveJournal Client

Picture of MultiLJ with several windows open

MultiLJ is a LiveJournal client for Windows XP and Vista, whose most notable feature is that everything related to the functioning of the program - journals, profiles, post editors, and so on - appear as separate windows within the program. It is not dependent on one's default browser for displaying journals or profiles - one can have as many open within the program as one chooses. Also, one may have one or more post editors open at the same time.

MultiLJ is written in Visual Basic 2008 and requires the Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework. You are not required to download a separate copy of the Framework, as MultiLJ's installation will get it for you if it does not find it - note that this requires that you be online during installation.

MultiLJ can be downloaded here - just double-click on the .msi file that downloads.

Technical support can be found through the LiveJournal MultiLJ community, and also by e-mail at techsupport@ravenslakeconsulting.com

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What is the status of Help under Vista?
A: The Help was written under Windows XP, and therefore (in theory) does not run under Vista. Blame Microsoft...
Q: Will MultiLJ run on a Mac?
A: I've not heard reports from the field yet, but based on how the technology works, the specific combination of MultiLJ on an Intel-based Mac running Parallel Desktop hosting either Windows XP or Vista should both install and run correctly. This will be updated when appropriate...
Q: Will MultiLJ run on Linux?
A: We tried it - unfortunately, the best-case scenario failed. We tried installing it under Ubuntu 8.04 with Mono (since Mono is the open-source equivalent of .NET), but the installation failed when it attempted to update .NET (since Mono isn't true MS Windows). So the answer here is no.
Q: My Friends Page or a Journal browser is acting strangly - I can't see some entries and I'm told that certain entries may be inappropriate for minors when I should be able to see them. What happened?
A: Your MultiLJ browser is not logged in. Browsers use a separate login system than the rest of MultiLJ, and occasionally they may log out. Try logging in again, or restarting MultiLJ if necessary.
Q: Can I post to multiple journals or communities?
A: Directly, no. Indirectly, yes. MultiLJ allows you to post to the journal you are currently logged in under and any communities that you have posting access to. Currently, the easiest way is to write your post, then (before you click "Post") select "New Post" again and copy the contents of the first post into second, changing the destination appropriately, as well as any other changes you wish to make. Then click "Post" on both posts. Currently, MultiLJ does not allow you to post under a personal journal under which you are not logged in, though you can write up a journal entry under one name, copy it, post it, then log in as another user and repost it.
Q: Does MultiLJ support Unicode?
A: Yes. This is a recent change.
Q: Will MultiLJ run on a 56K modem?
A: Yes - this has been tested and it does work. Note that the login process may seem a bit slow, mainly because there's one point that MultiLJ downloads your userpics into memory, but once you're past that point, it runs reasonably well. Make sure you have version 1.1.1.0 or later, as that's the point at which that capability was added.
